Vernon Square is one of the original squares of Darien, which was laid out by James Oglethorpe in much the same fashion as Savannah a few years earlier. It was the social center of the port during the 19th century, as well as home to the wealthiest timber brokers and merchants of the day. Joesph Hilton was one of the best known, and built his home here. Vernon Square should not be missed when visiting Darien.
