B J Confectionary, Hog Hammock

Hog Hammock Historic District, National Register of Historic Places

One of the last intact landmarks of Hog Hammock, B J Confectionary served as the island’s de facto grocery store for many years. It was owned by the late Bennie & Viola Johnson; Mrs. Johnson was known for her beautiful grapevine wreaths, which she made regularly and sold to tourists. The section of Hog Hammock where this store is located is known locally as “Johnson Hammock” and the neighborhood even has an active Facebook page!
