I’ve been sorting through some 3000 images for an upcoming book about Sapelo Island and came across these shots of the Katie Underwood at the confluence of the Duplin River and Doboy Sound.

As one who always chooses to ride on the outside upper deck of the boat to take in the scenery and the salt air, I can attest that these hard metal benches inside can be very useful when it’s raining, especially in winter.

Nanny Goat Beach

This is my favorite beach in Georgia, characterized by pristine dunes and miles of “no people”.

It’s also the nearest beach to Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary, one of the largest near-shore live-bottom reefs in the Southeast. It’s located sixteen miles east of Sapelo Island.

A small tyrant flycatcher, this Eastern W00d-Pewee (Contopus virens) was busy catching bugs, which are in great abundance on the island, near the Farmers Alliance Hall during my last visit. I was glad to get a shot of him at work.

On occasion, cows can be seen roaming freely around Hog Hammock, grazing on grasses and weeds in the isolated community. While this may seem a random occurrence, it is actually a sustainable practice dating back hundreds of years and the cows’ ramblings aren’t unknown to their owners.

Just outside Hog Hammock is the community of Johnson Hammock, barely distinguishable but hauntingly beautiful in its own special way. It’s characterized by numerous old moss-covered oaks.
