Manufactured kit houses, like this well-preserved side-gabled example, proliferated in McIntosh County (and much of America) from the 1930s to the 1960s. Such structures were improvements over earlier vernacular structures and afforded more convenience to homeowners than was previously available.
You are certainly aware of the Sears houses of the 20th century. I wasn’t aware that after Hurricane Katrina, Lowe’s sold prenanufactured homes called “Katrina houses.” When we began looking at building, the homes were no longer available through Lowe’s. I copied one of the plans, changing the floor plan slightly.
My architectural photographer brother said he saw a very similar old cottage on a visit to a South Georgia plantation.
